Road accidents are common and can happen even to the most experienced and cautious drivers. They occur in seconds and are often unavoidable. That’s why your response after an accident is crucial. Below is a comprehensive guide on what to do if you are involved in a road traffic accident.

Immediate Response

Staying calm can be challenging, but it’s essential. If there are injured individuals, call emergency services at 112 immediately.
If you are a LEV INS client with Third Party Liability or Casco Insurance, your next call should be to our 24/7 emergency line: 0800 10 200. Our call center will assist you, and if needed, our Auto Assistance team will be dispatched to the scene.

Depending on your insurance coverage, damages to your vehicle and others may be covered—even if you are at fault.

Types of Motor Insurance

Generally, motor insurance is divided into two main types – insurance that covers property and non-property damages caused to third parties, and insurance that covers damages to your own vehicle. The compulsory Motor Third-Party Liability Insurance covers all property and non-property damages that you may cause to others in the event of a road traffic accident. CASCO (Comprehensive) Insurance, on the other hand, covers damages to your own vehicle.

The optional CASCO Insurance offered by Lev Ins provides a number of additional benefits to the insured, including free roadside assistance of up to 150 km, on-site support from a mobile team when necessary, a mobile application for fast claim submission, and more details that you can find on the insurance page here.

When Is Police Presence Required?

Traffic police must attend the scene if:

  • There are injured persons
  • More than two vehicles are involved (chain collision)
  • A single-vehicle accident occurs (e.g., hitting a tree, fence, or pole)
  • There is disagreement over fault
  • The accident causes traffic congestion
  • There is suspicion of alcohol, drug use, or lack of a valid driver’s license
  • A foreign-registered vehicle is involved
  • A vehicle carrying hazardous materials is involved

Declaring an Accident with a Bilateral Statement

If no one is injured, only two vehicles are involved, and both drivers agree on fault, the accident can be reported using a Bilateral Statement (BS). This is a two-copy form provided by your insurer when you purchase Third Party Liability or Casco Insurance.

To ensure your insurer accepts the report, it is crucial to complete it correctly. Here are some tips to help you do that:

Important:
If you are unfamiliar with the BS form, call 0800 10 200 for assistance. Incorrectly completed forms may result in denial of compensation.

Key guidelines:

  • Complete the form immediately at the scene
  • Fill in all required fields clearly and without errors or corrections
  • Use information from both drivers’ insurance policies and driver’s licenses
  • Both drivers must sign both copies
  • Each driver keeps one copy
  • The at-fault driver fills in Column A; the other driver fills in Column B

Failure to follow these steps may result in denial of compensation by the insurer.

When and how to notify the insurer in case of an accident?

In the case of civil liability insurance, it is advisable for the driver at fault to notify their insurance company of the accident within seven days. The injured driver has the right to file a claim for compensation with the insurer of the driver at fault. In general, it is advisable to notify the insurer within 7 days of the accident.

Claims under comprehensive insurance must be filed within 5 days of the occurrence or discovery of the event. In the case of theft and robbery, the deadline is 24 hours, while in the case of fire, it is 72 hours. Lev Ins customers have access to a mobile app for filing claims, which gives them a "fast track" for processing claims. The app can be accessed by calling the toll-free 24-hour hotline at 0800 15 333.

Compensation is paid within 15 days after the insured or injured third parties have submitted all the required documents related to the establishment of the event and the amount of damage, but no later than 3 months from the date on which the insurance claim was filed.
